A tale of the House of the Wolfings and all the kindreds of the mark written in prose and in verse William Morris 9781178357745 Books

If you have enjoyed the fantasies of J.R.R. Tolkien and/or C. S. Lewis you have already experienced the influence of William Morris (1834-1896).

Not simply a prose romance, The House of the Wolfings, is a symbolic tale that expresses the author's love of family and the natural world, embracing a view of an unselfish society caught up in a battle to protect itself from the baser instincts of an outside attacking force.

Though written in 1888 this volume sends a beautiful utopian message of what our societies have lost and struggle to regain.

this was a gift, so as for me reviewing it honestly can't say but I was told it was a nice read for an older book and that you must have an open mind to different possibilities..
Never was able to read the book because the print was so tiny. What a shame.
If you love the mythic imagery, beautiful prose and verse of Tolkein then you may well find this fantasy novel equally enjoyable. Few modern authors write with the clear and beautiful style of both Tolkein and Morris
Great to have Morris in print.
Written in a simpler time and laced with prime characters speaking in rhyme, this book is an excellent conduit for attuning readers to reading and understanding older styles of prose. I would recommend this book for students before diving into Faust, Dante's Inferno, or even Joseph Conrad. Which is not to say that either the story or writing style is in the same lofty category of any of those just mentioned, but for today's reader, this book is easier to understand and follow. I believe it would serve as a good primer for more difficult reading.

I would also recommend it to anyone interested in Roman history (it shows Rome from the point-of-view of the "barbarian"); or anyone who like Tolkien.
William Morris was said to be one of the inspirations of Tolkien for his creation of Middle-earth.

Here, with the Wolfings, you should find the origins of the Rohirrim, or Ëorlingas, and of the Wainriders, a group of Easterlings from the distant past of Gondor.

Thiodulf the Goth here repels a Roman invasion with the help of his secret lover, a daughter of the Gods. The fantasy elements are much subdued, but the rhyme in which it is told makes it all the more compelling
Magnificent bit of literature. I can see how (why) Tolkien took some inspiration from this as he was creating the Middle Earth lore and stories. If you enjoy/love Tolkien's works I think you will appreciate and enjoy The House of the Wolfings. Its about Germanic tribes that live in a somewhat idealistic world (somewhat alternate history though thats not at all how this was written, thankfully) in which their Houses/tribes live wonderfully combined lifestyles of wild yet civilized in a great forest until the Romans come to conquer. There is battle, heroism, magic, romance, and just wonderful story telling. Its told/written in a way that is lacking in most modern literature-as if it is mythological history (its a nice escape to think it is..). Definitely recommend this for those that love grand epic stories, fantasy, historical ficiton, or just a great escape.
