I had the pleasure of listening to Joe read from Poison Sonnets at a reading once. Imagine each of these poems read with the warm glow of a slight Southern Indiana accent, long, low vowels, and such a quiet gravity that characterizes the tone of the book altogether. Joe's balance of Midwestern sentimentalism and intellectual stargazing is enrapturing. His dance with language is intriguing and playful as in "Cleave," in which he presents his take on the two conflicting meanings of the word. And the sense of accumulation and connection between the poems builds up a sense of growth and weight and sting which is offloaded in powerful symbols and conclusive tones that never give the impression of being difficult or abstract.I highly recommend the book and look forward eagerly to the next.

This book has an engine that drives the reader forward from page to page. Like a puzzle the reader is compelled to solve. These interlocked sonnets flow from one to the next, each clearly linked by a word or concept. The seductiveness of seeing how one moves into the next is the engine of this book. And the conceit is poison, mostly poison found in fields, common plants, used for esoteric purposes or eaten by accident. I found the poems I liked best were the ones about animals. The first poem about a mare is magnificant. When the author speaks about his family life, he is less compelling perhaps. His voice is, on the other hand, in pure command when his subject moves beyond his own life into the scenery of nature and mystery and forces of black magic. A very strong first book that makes me hope for the next.
